Hey, everyone! My name is David, and I am a go kart enthusiast. I have been working with go karts for over a decade. People often ask me about what kart to choose, which one would be the best for their kids or for them and so on. So I decided to create this little website, where I reviewed the best karts that I have worked with and are commercially available. So I really hope that you will enjoy my website and that it will help you to pick the right kart for you or your kids. Enjoy!
For easier navigation, you can choose the type of the go kart you are interested in below and jump right to that section.
Go karts are small, often four-wheeled vehicles. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. From electric to high powered two/four stroke karts. However, they don’t always need a power source. Gravity Racers, or “Soap Boxes” as some people call them simply race downhill, and hence are powered by gravity. Overall, karts can be divided into a few different categories, and these are the main ones:
- Buggies – Buggies are much stronger than other go karts, and thus often feature safety measures like seatbelts or a roll cage. They are designed for driving over sand dunes and can often reach speeds of more than 60mph with multiple passengers.
- Electric Go Karts – The cheapest karts you can get, if I am not counting pedal karts. They are suitable for inexperienced riders and children, as they accelerate extremely quickly and don’t need petrol. All they need is some time to recharge the battery. Some of them can even reach the same speeds as petrol karts.
- Gas Go Karts – Traditional go kart is preferred by a majority of experienced riders. They require slightly higher maintenance than electric vehicles, but can reach speeds of up to 125mph depending on the model you purchase. Petrol karts are usually designed for driving on roads, or off-road – usually not both at the same time. On road petrol vehicles are much faster, and lighter. However, off road ones are much stronger, and heavier – and can be just as much fun.
Electric Go Karts for Sale
So you like the sound of a low maintenance vehicle? Electric go karts for sale are one of the simplest and most versatile vehicles, and are mostly focused on children. They are generally much safer, as the added weight of a heavy battery keeps the vehicle firmly on the floor, preventing it from rolling if you take a corner at high speed. Therefore, for great family fun an electric kart is one of the best options.
|Name||Dimensions (inches)||Top Speed (mph)||Max Weight (lbs)||Price|
|Razor Ground Force 1||41 x 16 x 29||12||140||$|
|Razor Ground Force 2||41 x 16 x 29||12||140||$$|
|Razor Dune Buggy||15 x 22 x 36||10||120||$$$|
Razor Ground Force Version 1
This kart is designed mainly for children. Adults may not get quite as much fun out of it. This is because it only has a top speed of 12mph. However, if you’re looking for a great birthday present for your child, they will surely love it. It features a quiet variable speed, chained engine, and the battery takes an incredibly short time to recharge. Once the battery has charged, you can expect around 45 minutes of use before the battery needs recharging.
Regarding safety, the Razor Ground Force features a thick, steel frame – along with a strong seatbelt, to keep your child safe.
- Steel Construction
- 4 ½ Inch Tires
- Top Speed of 12mph
The Razor Ground Force is a perfect way to let your child have some fun, without any danger. Providing they only ride it in safe places without any traffic, or under your supervision – they are guaranteed to love it. The safety features are bound to impress you.
The only negative point about Razor Ground is that it isn’t suitable for adults, as it is designed for children. So if you were planning on buying one kart for both you and the kids, then I have to disappoint you. The tires can also get worn quite easily, as there isn’t a great deal of tread on them in the first place. In order to get the best battery lifespan, it’s best to turn off the charger after 6-8 hours, as otherwise you can decrease the lifespan of the battery.
Razor Ground Force Version 2
Another quality product from Razor, however, this is the newer version. It still sports the nippy 12mph top speed for your children to have fun. However, the rear axle has been heavily upgraded – this allows it to steer much easier, and also improves the safety of your kids even further.
One of the best things about this kart is the fact it simply comes almost entirely assembled. You only need to attach the steering wheel and seat, and it’s ready to go. The fact that it comes with a helmet is a great addition, as it rides quite low to the ground and small children can easily ride under a stationary SUV for example and bang their head on the bumper. Even though 12mph isn’t exactly fast, it can still cause a nasty head wound. However, the included helmet easily absorbs the crash and keeps your child safe.
- Included Helmet
- Top Speed of 12mph
- Improved Rear Axle
Overall, you and your kids will love this electric go kart – the top speed of 12mph makes it nippy enough for children above 8. The upgraded rear axle also improves steering, making it much safer.
The seatbelt can occasionally pinch the skin and can slightly cut into the neck. The helmet is also a “one size fits all” – so for some children, it may be too tight or too loose. However, it is easy enough to get another helmet that will fit your child better.
Razor Dune Buggy
While still being powered by electricity, the Razor Dune Buggy is designed for off road use. Therefore, it features sidebars constructed from steel, to improve the safety of the dune buggy. Regarding safety, the Razor Dune Buggy features a steel frame, and a padded bucket seat combined with a seat belt. Therefore, even when driven at its top speed of 10mph, the included safety features are enough to keep your child safe should an incident occur.
The 8-inch knobby tires are enough to absorb bumps and shocks sent through the dune buggy when driven off the road, and provide a huge amount of fun for all ages.
- 8 Inch Knobbly Tires
- Hand Throttle and Brake
- Padded Seat with Seat Belt
The Razor Dune Buggy provides massive amounts of off road fun for children thanks to the suspension and knobby tires; the 350-watt engine provides ample power to tackle even the worst of dunes. However, dunes aren’t the only thing that this buggy will tackle, take it through the forest and tear up the mud. If you are concerned about safety, you can manually set the max speed to 5mph until your kids get used to it.
Unfortunately, the initial charge time is 18 hours before you can even use the dune buggy, and every recharge after that takes 12 hours. Although you do get quite a lot of riding time, if you have two children who wish to use the dune buggy, you may find that buying another battery may be a good idea. The accelerator is a thumb paddle, which is easier to operate for younger children. However, it may not be as natural for older children.
Gas Go Karts for Sale
Gas go karts are a great toy for gas enthusiasts. Although they are much more expensive, they are much faster than electric versions. Many are available in two or four stroke variants, along with engines ranging from 100cc to even 500cc, making them pretty quick. They usually have more than one seat for passengers, allowing you to bring your friends along and enjoy the drive together. Higher cost also means better features, so they also come with headlights, indicators, horn and many of them are road legal too – so in the Summer, you can even drive them to work.
|Name||Dimensions (inches)||Top Speed (mph)||Max Weight (lbs)||Price|
|TaoTao ATK-125A||70 x 52 x 51||30||220||$|
|Kandi 150cc||96 x 59 x 62||40||320||$$|
|XRX Trailmaster||91 x 53 x 57||50||500||$$$|
This particular go kart is incredibly intriguing, with a “Jeep” style design, and a yellow color. The 125cc engine is perfect for older children and teenagers. The safety features such as 4-point racing harnesses and bucket seats make it pretty safe as well. The maximum speed is limited to 30mph, ensuring maximum safety for both you and your children.
The TaoTao ATK-125A is also incredibly easy to maintain, you don’t need to mix oil with gas, just add the gas to the gas tank, and add oil to the oil tank and that’s it. The electric start is also really helpful, especially for children. No more kick-starting the buggy, simply push the pedal down a little and press the electric start while in neutral. Semi-automatic gear is really easy to use even for children since there is no need to use the clutch. Just shift the gears and have fun.
- Electric Start
- Bucket Seats with Racing Harnesses
The TaoTao ATK-125A is powerful enough for older children, and you can easily blast through any terrain at a maximum of 30mph. It’s incredibly easy for anyone to use, there is no need to mix oil and gas, and there is no clutch. The off-road tires give it plenty of grip uphill, and due to the intense grip, it can even be driven on the slippery ground such as snow, meaning it is all year round fun.
You may find yourself changing tires on this buggy more often than you’d like to. However, this all depends on how you drive it, and the terrain you are driving on.
The Kandi 150cc buggy is fully automatic go kart, which is absolutely hassle free – simply push the pedal down and off you go. The 150cc engine provides enough power for any terrain you want to tackle.
This kart also features two seats, that can accommodate both adults and children, making it fun for the whole family. It can travel at a maximum speed of 40mph with two average adults in the seats, making it fast enough for off-road driving in the woods or on the beach. You can be sure you’ll get hundreds of hours of fun with this kart, simply because it is suitable for almost every terrain, regardless of the weather, or how uneven the terrain is – the integrated suspension will absorb the majority of bumps.
- Fully Automatic
- 2 Seats
The speed is probably the best feature of the Kandi 150cc; 40mph top speed is just awesome. The safety features included such as the steel chassis, along with bucket seats and seatbelts make it perfectly safe for everybody to use. Thanks to the frustration free automatic gearbox, even your children can take it out for a spin and have hours and hours of fun.
Although it does feature headlights and indicators, these aren’t as bright as they should be and in my opinion, you don’t really want to drive this go kart around at night. The headlights aren’t bright enough to light up the terrain. However, they do allow other vehicles and pedestrians to see you, so they still make the job done. In some way at least.
XRX 300cc Trailmaster Go Kart
If you are looking for a manly toy to play around with, then this Trailmaster Go Kart is the one for you. Packing a massive engine, along with a fully automatic gearbox, the Trailmaster Go Kart is much faster than many other gas go karts for sale currently available. The build quality is fairly decent too, not the best it could be – however it will be fine unless you’re planning on thrashing it through an overgrown forest at 40+ mph. The thick, knobbly tires provide ample grip on even the sloppiest of surfaces, and boggy mud is also no match for this 30cc Trailmaster Go Kart.
If you’re looking for a 2 seater gas go kart, with an abundance of power, the New XRX Trailmaster Go Kart is your perfect match.
- Powerful Engine
- Automatic Gearbox
- 2 Seats
The Trailmaster Go Kart is absolutely fantastic; it features all the elements of a perfect go kart in one simple package. A powerful engine, an automatic gearbox, more than one seat, an attractive design – and best of all? It’s road legal. Meaning you don’t have to ride it on a private land only, simply get it insured and take it for a spin around town on sunny days. What if you fancy going off road? Simply take it to the woods, the tires will ensure you have a perfect grip on the surface, and you’ll have plenty of fun.
The seatbelts could be a bit comfier. However, this is easily rectified by buying seatbelt pads, just like in the standard car. Despite the seat belts not being comfortable, they do their job of keeping you safe perfectly fine, and are wonderfully strong should an incident occur.
Pedal Go Karts for Sale
Pedal go karts are a great way to get your children used to driving, they are super safe due to the fact, that they have no engine. However, your child can still go quite fast, and practice steering. Many children are fascinated about driving and want to drive just like their parents. So it’s not a bad idea to get them a pedal kart when they are young, then move to an electric go kart when they are older, and when they’re in teenage years, let them use a gas kart. By the time they’re old enough to drive legally on the roads, they’ll be masters and pass their driving test with flying colors.

The steel frame provides plenty of strength, without extra weight, allowing your child to be safe but still have plenty of fun. - Sealed Bearings
The BERG Toys Buddy Orange doesn’t require much maintenance, allowing you to simply get it out of the garage, and your children can start playing straight away. It is simple to use, for even the youngest of children. The BFR Hub allows your child to brake, go forward, and reverse – all with just the pedals. This makes it easy to use, and the tires provide plenty of grip.
This kart takes only 30 minutes to assemble. The seat is adjustable, allowing you to perfect the distance between the seat and pedals depending on the leg length of your child. The top speed is around 5mph on a flat surface, due to the single gear – making it super safe.
The tires tend to deflate quickly. However, it only takes a few minutes to inflate them, so this isn’t a huge issue.
The Hauck Lightning, while being on the lower end of the pricing spectrum, has really wonderful quality and features. The steering column is extremely light, meaning all children will find it effortless, and incredibly responsive during their time on the pedal go kart.
The sporty design makes it seem incredibly desirable for children. From the race styled pedals, to the bright green paint. The adjustable seat makes pedaling easy, regardless of how tall your child is. The rubber wheels enable a perfect grip on the riding surface and make the ride unbelievably smooth, which is essential for young children. It can reach the top speed of around 5mph on flat surfaces. This, of course, depends on how fast can your child pedal since Hauck Lightning has only single gear, which makes it really safe for small children. However, be aware of hills. When going downhill, Hauck Lightning can pick up quite a huge speed, which can be incredibly dangerous. Make sure your child is wearing a helmet while riding.
- Sporty, Lightweight Design
- Rubber Wheels
- Responsive Steering
The Hauck Lightning Pedal Go-Kart is a great choice considering the price. It allows your children to have plenty of fun during the summer months and is light enough to put in the car and take it wherever you’re going. The rubber wheels are rugged, and will last for quite a long time without changing.
Not suitable for larger children, despite the adjustable seat. It can also be quite hard to assemble, however once assembled it’s wonderful and provides years of enjoyment for your kids.
Merax Racing Style Ride On
The Merax Ride On is possibly one of the best pedal go karts for sale. The adjustable seat accommodates both small and larger children, allowing them to use this pedal go kart for a number of years.
It comes almost entirely assembled, requiring only a few parts to be put together, and once assembled, it can be stored away pretty easily. It’s also small enough to fit in the car, allowing your children to ride it wherever you go. It’s also the cheapest of the three pedal go karts I decided to review, but still one of the best I have ever seen. The rubber tires provide a comfortable yet enjoyable ride, and are fairly thick, meaning there is a lower chance of getting a puncture.
The build quality of the Merax Ride On is also wonderful, even after months of daily use, there is no noticeable rattling of any components or any wobbling of the steering column. This makes it perfectly safe and comfortable. However, it’s recommended that your child wears a helmet while driving because the go kart can go quite fast downhill. So it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
- Adjustable Seat
- Rubber, Aired Tires
- Great Build Quality
It comes almost pre-assembled, making the final stage of assembly a breeze. All tools required for assembly are included, meaning you don’t have to frantically search the garage for your tool box. The great, durable build allows you to pass this go kart down to your younger children, and save money while doing so.
Merax Ride On has been designed for younger children, and the seat isn’t THAT adjustable – therefore it’s best for children aged from 3 to 6 years.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Difference Between Gas and Electric Go Karts?
There is a huge amount of differences between them. Here are the most important ones:
- Power – Gas karts tend to go much faster than electric ones due to the powerful engine, sometimes as powerful as 500cc. Whereas the majority of electric karts are limited to around 12mph, which is perfect for children, but adults will be yearning for more.
- Design – Gas karts are usually much heavier, as many are designed for off-road use and the heavy steel construction, which is required for safety, makes them incredibly heavy. Therefore, a powerful gas engine is required to be able to power the heavy kart. Electric vehicles are simple, and often much lighter. Therefore, they don’t require as much power to pick up speed.
- Age – Electric karts are predominantly designed for children, due to the speed restrictions. However, many gas go karts for sale are road legal, allowing you to drive it around the neighborhood if you wish, and often have more seats – enabling you to have fun with the whole family.
Can You Ride a Go Kart on the Street?
It all depends on which go kart you purchase, and where you live. Most gas go karts, providing that they are no more than 20hp and possess headlights, tail lights, and indicators, can be driven on the road. However only if they are insured just as a standard car. However, it is best to check the local regulations first, as the fines for driving them on the streets can be fairly high, in case they are not legal. It is up to you, to do the appropriate research before purchase, and the restrictions within your country or state to determine if your vehicle is legal for road use.
Pedal go karts, as they have no engine, can be driven on the streets perfectly fine. However considering that they are designed for children, it’s best that you keep an eye on your child and only allow them to ride on quiet roads in the neighborhood.
Electric go karts for sale aren’t exactly road legal due to the speed limitations. However, providing you live in a quiet neighborhood, it’s reasonably safe to ride one on your street, just keep an eye out for cars.
How Fast Can a Go Kart Go?
This answer varies depending on which go kart you purchase:
- Gas – Some gas go karts are limited to 30/40mph. However, they can go as fast as 100+mph depending on which one you buy, and how powerful the engine is. The majority of them is restricted to below 50mph. However, you can remove the restrictor (if there is one) to unlock the full power of your new toy.
- Electric – Usually can only go as fast as 12mph. However, some more expensive ones can reach extremely high speeds, but these feature huge batteries and are not ideal for children.
- Pedal – Around 5mph on a flat surface, which is perfect for younger children. However, this does depend on whether the kart is geared or not. Single geared ones will only reach around 5mph, however if they are geared, they can go much faster. It’s especially a good idea to keep an eye on your child if the terrain is uneven since they can build up some speed going downhill.
Many go karts feature an adjustable speed restrictor, which is really great when you want to let your children drive all alone, these are usually adjusted with a hex key.
Are Go Karts Safe for My Kid?
This all depends on how old your child is. A pedal go kart is suitable for children between ages of 3 and 6. This is because they have no engine and children simply use their own body to power it, and therefore can’t reach high speeds.
Electric go karts for sale are safe for children from around 6 to 12, this is because they usually reach a top speed of only 12mph. They are also simple to use since there are no gears or a clutch to worry about.
Gas go karts are safe for children from 12 and above with the proper supervision. However because these can reach speeds of 40mph and above, it’s best to sit in the passenger seat with your child, so you can teach them how to drive the kart properly before you let them go out by themselves.
As with all karts, supervision is necessary to ensure your kid is safe, especially with electric and gas powered go karts. Overall, they are pretty safe for children.
Are Used Go Karts for Sale Worth It?
Used go karts for sale can be a good idea, but more often than not it can be incredibly risky, especially if you are purchasing one for your children.
At the end of the day, you don’t know how has the vehicle been treated by the previous owner, the brakes can be ineffective, which can cause a fatal crash, especially when talking about gas karts. I can’t honestly recommend a used go kart for sale because certain components could be damaged, or not work at all. Not to mention that some sellers can be shady about the vehicle’s past as they want to get rid of it. The engine in the gas-powered kart could be on its way out, and break the next day, leaving you with a broken kart, and some upset children.
If you are going to buy a used go kart, here’s a few things to look out for:
- Oil – Look around where the vehicle was stored, if there are oil drips on the floor, do not purchase the vehicle, oil leaks are usually a first sign of an engine going to die soon.
- Chassis – Look for anywhere where the kart has been re-welded, or snaps in the construction, if there are any areas that have been repaired, stay clear of the go kart as the structural integrity has been compromised.
If you want the kart to last for years, it’s best to purchase a brand new one, therefore, you know it will be working fine, and you know it will be safe to use. Buying a used go kart for sale is incredibly dangerous, especially for your children. Used go karts may have been modified, in order to make them go faster, however, this can also be damaging for the vehicle, and overheat the engine, which can easily cause a fire. Buying a brand new go kart is the best way to make sure it is safe, and not damaged at all.
So that’s about it. If you read my entire article, then you deserve a medal. I really hope that you found some useful information and that I helped you decide which kart to choose.
