Many go karts are not street legal straight from the shop, however with a few tweaks you can make yours street legal if you want to take it out on the road. Here’s how:
- You will need to test the speed of your kart. Book an appointment with the DMV to get this tested.
- You will need safety equipment on-board of the go kart, this includes a puncture resistant gas tank, rear mirrors, a seatbelt, head lights, brake lights, and indicators/turn signals, and a speedometer. While this may sound like a lot at first, if you have a car-savvy mechanic friend, he’ll be able to help you out with all of this easily. It’s not hard to set up, you just have to know what you’re doing. If you don’t know what you’re doing, then the internet is your friend.
- Check the laws in your state, as you should be able to further confirm what your go kart needs in order to make it road legal. This varies hugely state to state, but it is worth checking out before booking an appointment with the DMV.
Once you’ve got your road legal go kart, make sure to have fun! Go out and enjoy tearing up the asphalt! Many drivers recommend using a reflective glass attached to the back of the go kart, this informs other drivers that you are driving a slow kart. It makes them aware of this fact, and they will be able to drive safely near you, and pay extra attention to your kart to ensure your safety.
